Work started on this tube at the GE laboratories in the fall of 1924.and it was assigned the type number UV216B in March1925. It was announced to the public in September 1925. This tube's type number was used as a replacement for the UV216A, which caused confusion with the Western Electric type 216A. Being a rectifier, GE gave this tube the brand name "Kenotron"
