arvin:  ; 627 Rhythm Master

I obtained a radio dial belt number 185, manufactured by General Cement, which is specified for the Arvin 627 from a local parts supplier but it is too tight and as a result the fine tuning mechanism does not function (it slips).  I measured the belt and it is shorter that the what is specified on the package for the number 185 radio dial belt.  I tried other belts of that size as well as belts that were next three lengths longer and they all either were too tight and caused the fine tuning mechanism to slip or too loose and caused the belt to slip on the pulleys.  I taked to the supplier and the belts are 50-60 years old and it is likely that they have shrunk over time.  Is this a common problem?  Is there a simple cure for this problem short of installing a belt tension idler?  Thanks.

One approach that works better than you might expect is to take a belt which is too long and cut a piece out of it.  Then fasten the ends together with cyanoacrylate glue ("Super Glue").  This works especially well for rubber belts, or rubber O-rings used in place of belts, since the glue adheres amazingly well to rubber.  On a vintage belt, the glue may not hold as well, but it may be worth a try.  You'll want to avoid spreading the glue beyond the actual joint, because this may result in a stiff spot on the belt that will not bend around pulleys properly.

O-rings sometimes make good replacements, except that they are much stretchier than the originals.  This may give a different "feel" to the tuning or result in backlash.  Therefore it is nice to have some vintage belt stock to work with.

Just b luck I stumbled over this.
Since I can not see if somebody responded, I can only suggest that you use the link "Mail to the author" if you want to reach a member who has posted something. But it still should be reflected if there was an answer.

I presume that here you did not get an answer.
I see that the model shows only foreign pictures and small sized.

Would be wonderful if more members would photograph their sets and at least put in a narrow cut picture in size 933 pixels of the main set - not a direct front picture but a bit from the side and top (about 15 degrees angle).

Even more help for others would be additional pictures like the scale, sticker and/or plate, rear, chassis etc. Most helpful can also be the wiring in the chassis if it is still original - if somebody has taken out the chassis anyway. The top is a repair story ...
