Capehart Series 200
Capehart Series 200
You find a general Text for Capehart here, but each of the series needs some information which should be addressed for one series. This we do here for
Capehart Series 200
Capehart started this actually with the series 400 in 1931, followed by series 300 in 1933, series 500 in 1936 together with series 200 and a series 100 started in 1938. All these series have in common that they use turnover types of record changers. They followed the first the first systems Orchestrope and Amperion having assembly line changers.
The capehart Series 200 was very short lived and consisted of the following models:
Season E: 1936/37
202E Georgian
203E Georgian
204E Modern
205E Georgian
Season F: 1937/38
204F Modern
Tuner chassis and amplifier chassis
Normally a series shows different cabinets for a given season but she same chassis per season.
The cabinets names are given by the two last digits, followed by the suffix for the season.
In the Capehart Hardware Chart by Robert Baumbach,
for the 200E series is given tow chassis (7 + 5) for one 12" speaker, changer 16-E for one speed, straight tone arm with magnetic pic-up, BC, SW, LW, no Aladdin remote possible.
For the 200F series he indicates one 12-tube chassis for one 12" speaker, only BC and SW, no Aladdin remote possible. No record changer!
In case of series 200E we face that we probably find different chassis for the same season, but maybe this is a wrong assumption:
"Radio Collector's Guide 1921-1932 lists a Capehart model 200 for AC with an automatic phonograph on page 201 with 11 tubes: 58 58 56 58 56 56 47 47 80 56 57 - and has listed a price of $ 495 - for 1931 or 1932. Superhet for BC only with AVC and autom. noise suppression and resonance indicator.
For the 200E series:
Rider's volume 7, Capehart Corporation page 7-1 shows a "schematic no. 1" for Capehart 202 model:
9 tubes (5+4), 9 tuned circuits, 3-gang-tuning condenser, 3 wave bands including LW. Tuning meter. IF = 465 kHz, variable bandwith, tone control. Empty position for LW shown. Program switch.
Chassis number W-864, drawn for Rider's October 14, 1935.
It seems to be one chassis for the tuner and amplifier with the following:
6K7 RF, 6A8 osc/mixer, 2 x 6K7 IF, 6H6 det/AVC, 6C5 AF, 2 x 6F6 push-pull output, 5Z4 rect.
1200 ohm speaker field. Only one output secondary without data. 115 V AC 60 cycles.
Hum level 0.1 volts across 14 kOhms.
10 tubes (5+5) in total, two chassis:
Rider's volume 7, Capehart Corporation page 7-3 shows a tuner Capehart 203 model:
5 tubes, 9 tuned circuits, 3-gang tuning condenser, 3 or 4 wave bands including LW. Tuning meter. IF = 465 kHz, variable bandwith, tone control. Dotted LW shown. Program switch.
Chassis number W-869 drawn November 29, 1935 - for
6K7 RF, 6A8 osc/mixer, 2 x 6K7 IF, 6H6 det/AVC.
This chassis offers 3 bands but also a version with probably a 4th band for LW but it is not clear if it still could be three waves but an other selection with LW.
Rider's volume 7, Capehart Corporation page 7-2 shows a 5-tube amplifier 203 model:
Chassis number W-870, drawn November 29, 1935.
2 x 6F5 AF, 2 x 6F6 push-pull output, 5Z3 rect. 115 V AC 60 cycles. Two secondary outputs 5.3 ohms. 300 ohm DC speaker field. Additional probably only choke, 220 ohms DC. Entry for pickup 40 Megohm at 1000 cycles.
Since we are confronted with two possibilities of chassis and even two variants of the second arrangement on two chassis, We don't really know what the different models for the 200E series contain!
For the 200F series:
There is probably for only one model, 204F.
Rider's volume 8, Capehart Corporation page 8-1 shows a combined tuner/amplifier chassis:
12 tubes including magic eye, 9 tuned circuits, 3-gang tuning condenser, 4 wave bands including LW. IF = 465 kHz, NO variable bandwith, tone control. Program switch.
Chassis number W-921, drawn August 14, 1937.
6K7 RF, 6C5 osc, 6L7 mixer, 2 x 6K7 IF, 6G5 mag.eye, 6H6 2nd det, 6N7 AVC, 6C5 AF, 2 x 6V6 push-pull output, 5Z3 rect. 500 ohm DC speaker field, 200 ohm DC choke, 4 bleeders in total 10 kOhm. Two 8 ohm secondary for output. Input phono pickup without data.
Rider's 8 covers also series 400F on pages Capehart Corporation 8-2 and 8-3 but nothing more for Capehart. No changes and no changers.
