I have two different radios, both are the earlier 7180.

S/N H84809 has a dated Audio transformer 25 Sep 1958 and has a painted plywood case.

S/N H90626 has a dated Audio transformer 13 Nov 1958 and has a vinyl covered plywood case.

Both are working radios but H84809 has physical problems; the fascia plastic is failing and the whole chassis is loose in the case.

H90626 has the back incorporating a metal grill and has some speaker cloth glued to the inside. This back is secured with a single screw in the mid point of the left edge (viewed from the rear). There is also a light angle iron bracket just inside the left edge. This is obviously original as the heads of the bolts securing the brace are under the vinyl and the original ID label is still glued to that panel.

H84809 has no ventilation in this panel and the back is secured with two screws, close to the corners.

There are only 50 days between the transformer dates and the case has been revised in that time. Covering the case with fabric, adding the brace and providing ventilation to the rear would increase the production costs but there appears to be no increase in the retail price.
