Hi Mark.....The component is a 3-5 watt resistor. It is very common for radio's of that era ( EARLY 30'S) The only troubles you might find with these are shorts to chassis. Just make sure it is grounded only where schematic has it so. Nice radio....I have done a couple, and never seemed to get them working too well. But it is a  very sort after radio..............AL

Hello Alfred,

Many thank's for the reply and sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

I have buzzed the part out and it seems OK with no apparent shorts as you mention. I can see how it could easily short out.

The radio is now well on with the restoration however I have decided to leave the case as is and simply give it a good wax and polish. The chassis has been cleaned and re-capped and it is now working however the resistive mains lead is long gone so I have the dilemma of whether to add a resistor to the chassis to drop the voltage or feed all three wires out and do something external?? Not sure yet, any suggestions would be welcome.
