I have an issue with the flywheel of the radio, movement is not transmitted anymore to the dial strings. There is a gripping material part that is damaged, I've attached a picture. Does anybody know how I can fix it?

Thanks

Andrea

Hello.

If I had that radio set I would try to pull out that "friction washer" from the mechanism, to make a replica from it.

I know that is dificult to dismount all the mechanism to do that. So, I wouldn't do that.

Then what?

First I´d mesure the washer and then after   I 'd brake the washer to pull it out.

Then how to replace the new  washer  on?

Cut the new washer (replica) in two simetrical pieces, diametrically.

Then use an adequate epoxi glue to join the two pieces on its place around the rod. If the washer is a free wheel be sure glue doesn't drop over the rod.

If you don't like to use glue, two screws can be used insted. Holes must be made before cutting the washer.

Cordially

Mario

Thank you very much for your reply. What kind of material would you use to rebuild the washer?

Hello again

Looking at the picture, the washer seems to be a Zinc Aluminium Magnesium alloy. That material was used by manufactors, at that time, because it was  very mouldable.

That piece was molded using high pressured injection in a factory. No way to replicate the same methode  at home.

So, if you have now its dimensions try to get a cut of an aluminium rod and drill the central hole on it.

If  is not easy to you to get that, use wood instead*, to make an  internal part if it. Then after glue   two aluminium thin washers to assure the correct friction. One on each side of it , like a sandwich. Sandpaper it all around to a perfect finishing.

Note: See how hard is the original alloy to choose the correct aluminium washers hardness. Strach both using a needle.

At the end. paint your replica using a zinc spray.

* or a moulded piece (resin)
