Grundig Majestic 1041 W
? Grundig Majestic 1041 W
Hi:
Being a newbie I made a mistake today. I should be studying theory before diving in.
I was excited to work on my Grundig Majestic 1041 W. This radio worked Ok on FM but not on other bands.
I tested the tubes, only one was questionable . EL 41
I found a few bad capacitors ( tested bad on a capacitor checker).
After installing the new caps, mostly underneath, I turned on the radio. I saw smoke coming from underneath. Plugged it out.
It was a 1,5K Ohm resistor ( black in color, brand "Rosen" ) I also noticed that I may have moved the resistor since it was touching an adjacent solder.
Removed the resistor and installed a similar one.
Still smoke and the resistor heats up.
What have I done?
Sincerely
M Khan

I'm not a technician myself but there might be a simple explanation. Did you observe the polarity of the caps you replaced? You may have soldered one in backwards. A simple mistake that may happen. Also check to see if one of those caps connections is not touching anything else. I have heard some of those German radios are are a little tight for space.

Power up without tubes.
It is very helpful to power up the radio without tubes. If you have a adjustable transformer, start slowly. After the Elecrtolyt caps are charged, there should no current.
The DC voltages will become much higher then printed in the schema and may stay for hours after power of (DANGER!) .
If there is any resistor becoming hot, there is a big problem! If the voltages will not stay some minutes there is also a problem.
If alls is ok without tubes, assume the cap from Anode of EABC80 to g1 of EL41.
You must know, that all black-brown WIMA caps are defect. Some can kill tubes and resistors or transformers, other may only make the sound bad. So it is best to replace all of these caps before first power on.
I hope you have a fuse of the correct value installed!
For more help, you may send me your Photofact, if it is this. I have only the German schema.
This thread will be moved to this model.

Mr Jung:
Thanks for your kind advice.
I discovered 2 shorts I had caused while soldering.
The Electrolytic Cap tested fine. It read 64mF each on my capacitance meter. Original description on can is 50 and 50 mF
The radio works great now, like a Grundig should. Even the AM is coming strong.
The heating resistor was R37 ( 1.3 K ohms 2 watts ).
I installed a 1.5 K ohms resistor which I plucked from a parts radio.
Since the correct resistor vaue is 1.3 Kohms, I will replace with a correct 1.3 Kohms.
Thanks
