I found no Automatic Volume Control feedback circuit and the volume intensity does follow the strength of the RF signal. This is bothersome when tuning since a strong carrier will play very loud. Have I analyzed this behavior properly, or might my radio have a failure?

Robert,

You are correct that this radio does not have an AVC circuit.  Therefore the behavior you are seeing is normal.

As you can see on the schematic, the grids of the RF, mixer, and IF stages all have DC paths to ground.  Bias for the RF and IF stages is controled by the volume control, which sets the cathode voltages of these stages.  So the grid bias of these stages is very much "manual" and not "automatic."

Best regards,

Tom
