Hello:

My Globetraveler III (TN6000 Series) radio has a capacitor between the whip antenna and the radio circuit board. It has broken in half.

According to the Nordemende schematic diagram, it is a 4700pf capacitor and is not polarized. I suspect it might be needed for static electricity supression purposes, but I do not know for sure. I think it is a ceramic capacitor. There is a wire coming out of each end and it looks a lot like a small resistor.

Question: Will any non-polarized capacitor of the proper specifications be acceptable? Do I need to be concerned whether it is rated at (for example) 200 volts or 2000 volts? Do I need to be concerned about the capacitor material?

Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

It's not super-critical...

...you're right; it is a ceramic capacitor.  I think a typical voltage rating for these is 500 volts.  It won't hurt to replace this with a 4700pF 1000V ceramic disc (still readily available)...

Todd:

Thanks very much for the information. Last week, I ordered some capacitors from a place called Vintage Parts in the UK. They are rated at 700 volts and look similar to the one in the picture. I ordered four of them and would be happy to mail you one if you ever need one.

I own two Globetraveler II's, a Globetraveler III and a Globetraveler Pro, so the photo was from another radio (I hope I didn't confuse you).

All of my Globetravelers have problems, but I hope to get at least one and possibly two of them working OK by Christmas. After that I will try to get one of my Grundig Satellit's working (probably a 2013 project). It just never ends. It seems that I'm always on the internet searching for parts or donor radios :)

Right now, I'm working on a Blaupunkt Derby De Luxe that I bought from a good friend. All it needs is a good cleaning and a new 4 inch speaker. I was wondering whether I could just have the existing speaker re-coned since it is just showing wear around the outer circumference. It is getting harder and harder to find replacement speakers that are slim fit and have the correct bolt pattern.

Take care,

Mike Witas
