I have just added this new model to the collection. Before doing so I searched on the data base and by doing a tube search, with no result.  I have been searching today on the web and have found that this set could be similar to the Mullard MAS231.  I found the MAS231 on the Radiomuseum data base and they appear almost identical.  This entry was submitted by Mario Huizinga.  I have looked at his entry and on his website http://www.datastress.com/~mario/radio/types.php?group=600 and find these photos show two different radios.  The pictures I have submitted come from an original Philips GB Service Manual so I think they should be the correct ones.  I will gradually  submit all the contents of the service manual, as time permits me. There are fifteen pages, plus a large pull out sheet of the full circuit diagram (schematic) and of the components layout.

My best regards to all

John C.

Dear John,

That MAS 231 entry was made by myself.

That set is look like your Philips 681A. Two lateral knobs are shown in the opposite side, but those photos were shoot from different places. Also the tube series are the same.

I've more information available about Mas 231.

I'll send now one photo of the chassis to compare.

Best Regards

Mário Coelho

The collector that added the photos to the set on Mario's site (Achim van Duuren) may have been in error with the type number. Another possible explanation would be that in the Netherlands Philips sold a different set with the same type number - which is more unlikely but also possible.

I have contacted Mario Hunzinga and asked for a contact to Achim van Duuren to sort that out.

Regards
Mark

Hi all,

I received Mark's mail and send a mail to Achim today.

I also looked at the service manual of the 681X (usually the A and X models have identical housing) and found that the image in the manual looks identical to the photo listed in my database as being 681A(X).

From this I conclude that the 681A produced in of for the UK has a different cabinet design than the 681A produced for/in the Benelux in1947.

When I receive an answer from Achim I will post it here.

Received the repley from Achim, but he no longer owns that radio and he does not have any photograps of the type number plate.

Dear Mario,

At last I have managed to submit the drawing of the layout of the top of the chassis.  It has taken me many hours of work.  Most of the diagrams in this Service Manual were 'greyed out' to prevent copying. They were made presentable by IrfanView.  This last one, however, the dots of the 'greyed out' process were the same density as the drawing.  This has caused me to practically redraw the whole thing.  Done to the best of my ability!!   As I said many hours of work.   I think the two are the same, but not the photo of Achim Van Duuren.

Regards to all,

John C

Hello

According my documents, there are two different Philips 681

One was produced in Holland - a four band radio (Model 681 X) with 7 tubes (EF9, ECH4, EBF2, EF9, EL3, AZ1 and EM4) while the British made and in RM.org documented 681 A is a nine tube radio with four band and eight bandspread ranges.

Kind regards, Walter Haring, Switzerland
