I just purchased an Apex 8A. It has 2 switches on the sides. One of them is power. What is the other one for? Is it to switch from 25 to 60 cps? It doesn't seem to have an effect when I listen to it. Please reply, Jeff email: jeff.pennoyer@abbott.com

Hi Jeff,

Your radio has an unusual feature - a "High/Low Power" switch which changes the biasing of the IF amplifier stage.  Looking at the circuit, it would appear the real function of this switch is to change the sensitivity of the receiver, perhaps along the lines of what would normally be labeled as a "Local/Distant" switch.  If you tune in an especially weak or an especially strong station, does the switch have any effect?

This switch would have very little effect on the total power consumption of the set, and since the set does not run on batteries, an actual power management switch wouldn't really make any sense.

Tom
