Hi All,

Just thought I'd share my latest restoration & the product that helped me do it.

A few months back I bought a Ferguson Fieldfare (Model No:3114) on Ebay and after only minimal servicing it works very well.

It's an unusual radio with a somewhat 'cheap' case; cardboard, covered in black 'leather look' vinyl. The design & construction looks like it was conceived by a civil engineer, such is it's style. Hardly a Classic look!

Strangely, the battery cover is located on the top of the radio and is chrome plated steel on which the printing has been silkscreened on and, like other Thorn models that use this technique, the printing has deteriorated & the chrome is spotted & pitted.

There were several options I had in mind to restore this but none were as succesfull as the final method that came up by accident.

Whilst looking for coloured inkjet paper on Ebay (for making Engagement Invitation Cards), I came across Metallic finish inkjet paper in Brushed Alli, Gold, Silver etc., although it's NOT paper, it's a metallic look sheet plastic material, coated with a water absorbent coating.

Maybe others on here have come across it & already use it.

Anyway, being sceptical if it was any good, I bought a mixed sample pack of 5 different finishes.

I used the Brushed Alli (or Stretch Effect Metallic as it was refered to) on the Ferguson Fieldfare and once having matched the old type face, printed it via my inkjet printer and, once dry, spray coated it with SIMONIZ Clear Acrylic Lacquer from Halfords.

Here's the results:

Has anyone else used this Metallic 'paper'?

Anthony, What a great find! Your reproduction looks great! Do you have a brand name for that paper? Have you looked to see if it was available outside of eBay? I've already got several ideas that I can Use it on.

p.s.

Just to add, the material the 'paper' is made from is already available from most Craft & Hobby Stores.

The difference with the supply I bought was it's been treated with a water based coating to allow the ink to be absorbed.
