For me it seemed to be a homebrew radio using a Zenith chassis.

The dial looks unusual, so i think the chassis is a export model.

The tag on backside of the chassis is not readable.

Can you please mail the number?

Dear Kurt,

I looked with very big attention to your Zenith Radio. What I detected is that the cabinet is identical with an radio which makes part of my collection, but which is  Detrola brand.

I tried to contact Detrola’s descendants, and they communicate me that they never seen this type of cabinet and that is very probable that this cabinet was made for export to Europa. My cabinet is identical with your cabinet, including the cloth from the loudspeaker and the three metal brass bars.

My radio is built for 220 voltage, which makes me think that was manufactured for Europe.

I wish you success in the future!

Best regards,

Ing. Ion Carabas

UK/European Zenith?

...that dial has a distinctive UK or European look to it.  I am nowhere near a Zenith expert, and my own curiousity is piqued, but that doesn't look like your typical American Zenith, export or otherwise.  Perhaps Zenith had a subsidiary in Europe or the UK, licenced to use the Zenith trademark?  I wonder if this radio was not built 'for export', but may have actually been built IN the UK or Europe.  Has anyone taken a look 'under the hood/bonnet'? What does it look like under the chassis?  Does it contain US parts or European parts?...

...either that, or the dial got damaged and someone made their own replacement for it...it looks 'handwritten'...

...oder: Ist die Skala etwa ein Nachbau (die Originelle war beschädigt geworden und jemand hier etwas ein Ersatz selbst gemacht hat)?...sie scheint 'handgeschrieben' aus...

the owner of this radio is Mr. Miso Sapec from Slovenia. He asked me to forward the following to Hans Amberger:

On that plate is written:
Made in USA, by Zenith Corp
N545009

The tag number N545009 belongs to chassis 5708, but i could not find this chassis in my collection.

Close to this chassis is the 5708E chassis. You will find on our sites some models with this chassis like 7-DA-119 7-DA-126 and so on, but no one with chassis 5708 without letter E behind.

Zenith uses the letters before the model number as code in this example 7-DA means:

A is standing for all wave ac/dc and D is standing for 110 volt ac.

The letter E behind the chassis number describes very rarely a export model.

More usual is the letter A or AT behind the chassis number. Those chassis have most dual voltage.

From your small picture of the chassis i think your radio is not a export model because the transformer is to little for dual voltage.

The dial is sure for a export model i never saw one like this before.

Thats all i can tell you, maybe someone else knows more.

Greetings all.

What a beautiful radio!  Although my content may not help you, I want to share my experience with Zenith model numbers on domestic USA prewar sets.

The model number of Zenith sets in my collection appear to be stamped using a silver colored paint.  All are marked on the back of the cabinet, although I have one that is marked on both the cabinet and chassis.  Some are very difficult to read.  Have a look at a few:

5S150:

7S262:

10S470:

Because your radio is an export, this may be of no use to you, but I figured I'd share it anyway.

Cheers, Howard
