Universal AvoMeter (AVO Meter), Model D
The Admiralty and the Air Ministry procured many thousands of multimeters during WW2.
AVO instruments they procured were substantially the same as the commercial instruments of the time but modified to suit their particular requirements.Model D was a variant of Model 40 introduced in 1939/40 except that it did not contain the two 4.5-volt batteries used for the highest resistance range and had different voltage and current ranges.
The Q knob was retained but is non-functional and the divide by 2 button of model 40 has been replaced with a switch K=1 K=2.After the war, refurbished instruments were sold by military surplus retailers for many years.
DC Voltage 7.5 V 75 V 300 V 750 V AC Voltage 150 mV 1.5 V 15 V 150 V 750 V DC Current 7.5 mA 750mA 7.5 A AC Current 15 mA 150mA 1.5 A 15 A Resistance 1,000 Ω 10,000 Ω With the "K" Switch in the K=2 position, the FSD values above are doubled.
Early models were housed in an aluminium case with a wooden battery box.
