The standard Brenell had an erase head and a combined Brenell record/playback head but had provision for two more heads to be fitted. In the summer of 1958, staggered stereo was an available option and employed a pair of staggered stereo erase and record/playback heads which allowed reproduction of the commercially made American staggered stereo tapes.

Three more variants of the Mk 5 followed, the Mark 5 Series 2 model and the Mark 5 type M (Mk.5M) model in 1962, and the Series 3 model in 1963.
