Introduced in 1999, at the start of the era of economical high-quality digital photography for the general public, the Canon CA-PS100E Compact Power Adapter has a dual function. Powered from 100-240V 50/60 Hz AC mains, the adapter can be used to recharge NB-5H Ni-MH 6V battery packs for Canon cameras such as the PowerShot S10. The battery pack plugs directly into a socket of the adapter, where its presence is detected by a central third spring contact. A 'Charging' LED indicates when charging is taking place.
Alternatively, the adapter can be used to power a camera from AC mains instead of from the battery. This method is recommended when the camera is being used for an extended period of time in a studio, or when it is connected to a computer. The battery pack in the camera is replaced by a Canon DR-100 DC Coupler, which is connected to a socket on the right side of the adapter by a cable fitted with a 3-pole coaxial plug. A 'Camera' LED indicates when this mode is in use.

7.2 V DC 0.65 A (BatteryThere are minor differences between the internal dimensions of the sockets in the camera and the power adapter, and the external dimensions of the battery and the DC coupler. This allows the battery to be plugged into either the camera or the adapter, whereas the coupler can only be plugged into the camera. The 'E' suffix indicates that the AC power cord of the adapter is fitted with a European plug.
