  • Notes
  • A.Frederick Collins, wireless pioneer and founder of the Collins Wireless Telephone Co. (1903-1909), was also a prolific writer. In the October 6, 1906 Scientific American Supplement, he wrote an article titled “The Design and Construction of a 100-Mile Wireless Telegraph Set”, in which he describes a transmitter and receiver design. This receiver appears to match this article. Its maker is unknown, but it is a Collins design from this article. The Receiver uses the early vertical slide tuner and Carbon-Needle detector which were popular only from about 1904 through 1908. Note that Collins specifies that the detector needle be held on the carbon blocks by a string tied to a 15-grain lead bullet.
