- Notes
-
The Crosley 5648 is an AC/DC operated 5 tube superheterodyne BC band receiver. The BC band tuning range is from 540 to 1550kHz. Uses ballast tube W-46773 (Named in the tube list but not counted in the tube count). Model 5648 is part of the 649 model family, which all have a built-in loop antenna. Crosley advertising promoted the 649 model family with the statement: "Newly developed loop antenna is built-in". The 649 model family was derived from the Crosley 648 model family, which did not have the internal loop antenna but instead required an external antenna. The 648 model family also had a 455kHz wavetrap installed on some models, but the Crosley 649 family literature does not show the wavetrap option. The 649 family also list a 6A8GT oscillator/modulator tube while the 648 family list a 6A8G tube. The 649 family (except for the 5648 model) use chassis 649.
These models have 4 large push buttons used for station selection and have a gold etched vertical dial. The Crosley model 649A is in Brown, model 649B in Ivory, model 649C in Red, model 649D DeLuxe (in Walnut Veneer wooden cabinet), model 649E in Blue and model 649F in Tan. The same cabinet and colors apply for the 648 model family. The Crosley model 5648 is part of the 649 family and has a wooden cabinet but uses chassis 5648, which has a slightly different built-in loop antenna and the addition of an electrostatic shield (It also has a smaller tuning range of 540 to 1550kHz compared to the tuning range of 540 to 1725kHz for the rest of the 649 model family).
The 649 model family (along with model 5648) were also available for use with a 25 cycle, 100 to 125V power source, where a 100 ohm, 2w resistor was added to the chassis along with the substitution of a larger 60uF filter capacitor in the power supply circuit.
