A Cylindrical Zinc Carbon cell, of "C" size. About 3700 mAH at low current drain (20mA). Originally for medium size flashlights / torches.
Many transistor sets use 2, 4 or 6. Asian makers in the 1960s perferred 4 x "C" rather than the PP9 used in many larger UK models. Current cheap brands may be lighter and less capacity due to two hollow plastic bungs sealing top rather than original card and tar.
