The GE model P715 Transistor Pocket Radio can have an external plug-in charging unit in case rechargable AA cells were used. There was a color advertisement by GE in May 28, 1957 which stated "New General Electric All Transistor Pocket Radio plays up to 10,000 hours without changing batteries." Also for some of the transistors our first information is of April 1957.
Schiffer: "The Portable Radio..." says year 1956 (at fig.13.4v) for the model. In p.191 is mentioned that in the mid fifties NiCd rechargeable cells became available for consumer products and the P715 was the first radio to use them. Consequently a charger was required, too, if the owner wanted to use such rechargeable batteries.
