Hallicrafters S-40A (Runs 3 and above) moved the Audio Transformer from the chassis top to the bottom. The Rectifier tube was 80 for Runs 1-2; 5Y3 for Runs 3 and above. The Speaker wires (2) were routed through a small hole and directly soldered in circuit.
The following table lists some of the easy-to-identify differences of the S-40A versions.
Additional circuit differences (resistors, capacitors, wiring) are not described here; refer to the schmatics for additional differences. Note that the "U" model used a Universal power transformer (120/240 volts; 25-60 Hz) for export. It is confirmed that the "(Runs 1-2)" model had a "U" version; it is unknown if the "(Runs 3 and above)" model had a "U" version.
Refer to S-40 (Original) for the Guide to Identifying Hallicrafters S-40 Versions document.
Other Original/B versions include S-40 (Original) and S-40B.
