  • Notes
  • The HP 8140A is a hand-held optical test set that can be used as a fiber optic power meter, as a loss test set or as a light source. It can be configured with a range of plug-in source and sensor modules to cover the different optical wavelengths commonly used in datacom LANs and telecommunication networks, and can be used to measure the insertion loss of passive optical components and the total link loss to check for power budgets.
    HP Part No. 08140-90011.
Designed by HP Deutschland GmbH. Made in Japan.

The test set can be powered by 4 internal AA-size 1.5v batteries or by an external 110-250v mains power adapter supplying 6v DC.

    3 transmitter modules were available:

    81411A
    850 nm +-10 nm
Spectral bandwidth < 50 nm FWHM
    Output power > -17 dBm

    81412A
    1300 nm +-20 nm
Spectral bandwidth < 140 nm FWHM
    Output power > -20 dBm

    81413A
    1550 nm +-20 nm
Spectral bandwidth < 200 nm FWHM
    Output power > -25 dBm

The output power indicated is into 50/125 micron fiber. It is typically 20 dB less into single mode fiber.

2 sensor modules were available, both suitable for fiber up to 100/140 microns:

    81400A
    Si detector
    400 - 1100 nm
    Range +10 to -70 dBm
    Uncertainty +-5%
    Cal wavelengths: 550, 780, 820, 850 nm

    81401A
    InGaAs detector
    750 - 1700 nm
    Range +3 to -70 dBm
    Uncertainty +-5%
    Cal wavelengths: 820, 850, 1300, 1550 nm
