  • Model 8551A is the first HP Spectrum Analyzer, to be used in combination with the display section 851A. In 1967, the successor model 8551B / 851B was offered.
    RF section: Frequency range 10 MHz to 40 GHz with external mixers.
    10 calibrated spectrum widths:
    100 kHz to 2 GHz in a 1, 3, 10 sequence to 1 GHz.
    Coaxial input attenuator range: 0 to 60 dB in 10 dB steps.
    IF output frequency: 20 MHz.
    Display section: Dynamic range: 60 dB (log), 70:1 (linear),
    IF bandwidth 1, 3, 10, 100 kHz, 1 MHz.
    Dimensions Display Section: 425x185x467 mm.

    The HP 8551A was presented for the first time in the August, 1964 issue of the Hewlett Packard Journal, and in the 1965 catalog under the following subtitle: "A Totally New Concept in Microwave Spectrum Analysis".
