The Meissner Signal Shifter EX is a VFO (variable frequency oscillator) with an RF amplifier (kit version) that was typically used as an exciter for a larger transmitter. RF output is "in excess of 6 watts". Output is link coupled. The coils for six ranges (Five normally supplied with the set covering amateur bands of 10-11, 15, 20, 40, and 80 meters) are turret mounted with a six-position selector. The sixth position was for an optional band for an accessory coil strip for 160 meters, 12 meters (for doubling to 6 meters), or a narrower (AM phone) portion of the 80 or 20 meter bands An eye tube serves as a tuning and keying indicator. Crystal control is an option. The tuning control is graduated from 0 to 500 and is designed to overlap the bands by 2% on either side.
The tube count in the EX advertisements is 7 which includes two voltage regulators, VR105 and VR75.
The kit version cost $66.50 when introduced. A fully-built version was also available as part number 9-1090EX at a price of $99.50. The EX used two VR tubes for voltage control on both the screen and the plate of the 6V6GT oscillator as distinct from the earlier model 9-1090. The EX version also added two iron-core chokes in the cathode return circuits of the 6V6GT and the 807. The 1949 Allied catalog noted the shipping weight at 38 pounds.
