  • Dimensions (WHD)
  • 265 x 77 x 470 mm / 10.4 x 3 x 18.5 inch
  • Notes
  • The RT-174A FM-transceiver, somewhat different from the RT-174, is the main part of PRC-8, only in literature we can find the name PRC-8-A, on the equipment the -A suffix is never present.
    Frequency range is 20 - 28 MHz, FM (F3), 1,2 W.
The upper part of the Citizen band could be received, but no NBFM as the 6 dB selectivity is 75 kHz. VFO-tuning with a crystal-calibrator oscillator giving 4,3 MHz checkpoints. It has 4 IF amplifiers and a pulse sweep generator to control the transmit frequency.
All controls and antenna-connections are at the top.
The set was designed for field use with a multi-voltage battery BA-279, or for vehicular use with a 24 volts PSU and audio-amplifier AM-598. The net weight is inclusive the 3,65 kg battery. Transmit power is about 1,2 watts. Antenna 50 ohm BNC and short or long vertical.
All tubes, exept the 5A6, are of the subminiature 5BA Special Quality type. The complete IF circuits including the SQ- tubes are housed in sealed metal-tubes with B7G-pins, as well as the discriminator-circuit and the pulse sweep generator.
    Similar, but with different frequency ranges are RT-175A / PRC-9; RT-176-A / PRC-10 and the crystal controlled RT-339 / PRC-28.

I have no reproducable schematic on the PRC-8. As far as I know the difference with the PCR-9 and PRC-10 is in the matching circuit to the whip antenna. Anyway it should have its own schematic, because my neat schematics refer only to to the PRC-9 and PRC-10.

The PRC8 omits C-12, an extra antenna-tuning varco, that is worm-geared connected to the reduction-gear of the 5-section  tuning-varco in the PRC-9 and PRC-10. The difference can be seen in the attachments.
