  • Notes
  • The Showa KSTAT20SL-UP is a 20 ±1.5 dB ST-connectorised optical attenuator that can be used at 1310 nm or 1550 nm wavelength. Unlike other attenuator designs that incorporate a metal-coated mirror, it achieves the attenuation by the use of a very short length of metal-ion doped optical fibre. Hence the device has only two UPC (Ultra Physical Contact) polished surfaces. The ferrule and slotted sleeve are made of zirconia and the housing is nickel electroplated brass. The return loss exceeds 50 dBm and the acceptable power dissipation is 100 mW.

The typical insertion loss of a 1:32 optical tree coupler is around 19 dB. Hence a 20 dB attenuator is appropriate for reducing the optical signal level from a laser transmitter when it is connected directly to a receiver instead of via a coupler for test purposes.
