The primary laser transmitters used to distribute Timing, Trigger and Control (TTC) signals to the front-end electronics at the experiments at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are TTCex and TTCtx modules. These are 6U VMEbus modules with respectively 10 and 14 optical outputs. The TTCmx is a more economical 3U high module with only 4 lasers that is convenient for test and development work or driving very small trigger partitions. The module uses the same custom version of the 1310 nm Photon PT5343-13-3-ST laser transmitter with special accurately-matched short 30 cm singlemode optical fibre pigtails. The optical power of each laser is +1.0 dBm ±1.5 dBm, sufficient for each output to be fanned out by an optical tree coupler to 32 destinations using TRR-!B43 optoelectronic receivers.
The input to the TTCmx is AC coupled at ECL levels with a 50 Ω termination. A buffered electrical output is provided to allow additional TTCmx transmitters to be daisy-chained. Although the hazard level of the lasers is Class 1, output connectors or fibre ends should not be viewed with optical instruments. A red LED indicates when the lasers are active and the transmitter is equipped with a front panel switch that allows all the optical outputs to be disabled. The lasers can also be disabled by an Inhibit signal at the rear connector. The TTCmx is a standard 3U 4HP Europa module and draws 600 mA from a 5 V power supply. It was designed by Bruce Taylor and manufactured from 2000 to 2002.
