Airedale

The 1960s Wharfedale Airedale speaker enclosure was a free-standing assembly designed for corner and along-the-wall placement. It featured a robust construction with several key technical aspects:

Cabinet Design

• One-piece, free-standing assembly
• Suitable for corner or along-the-wall placement
• Sand-filled front panel to reduce cabinet resonance
• Ceramic tiles fitted to rear side panels for further resonance control
• Total weight exceeding 3/4 cwt (approximately 38 kg)
• Fitted with castors for easy movement

Driver Configuration

• Three-way speaker system:
  1. 15" W15RS bass driver with high-flux magnet and heavy cone
  2. 8" Super 8CS mid-range driver
  3. 3" Super 3 treble driver
• Upward-facing mid-range and treble drivers for omnidirectional sound dispersion

Crossover and Impedance

• Half-section three-way crossover unit
• Crossover frequencies: 400 Hz and 5000 Hz
• Impedance: 12/15 ohms

Power Handling

• Maximum input power: 20 watts

Controls

• Individual controls for middle and treble response
• Located on the rear panel

Airedale's design focused on achieving natural sound reproduction, particularly in terms of a clean bass response and an airy treble presentation.

The Airedale model evolved, with several iterations following the original 1960s version:
