There are quite a few errors in the Sam's photofacts. I used the non export model schematic from Radiomuseum.org for proper values and FM discriminator alignment.

  • C58 and C59 values swapped on the Sam's.
  • T4 secondary wire colors swapped. Green is ground and puts speaker SP3 electrically out of phase with SP1. The input to V8 is 180 degrees out of phase with V7.
  • Page 7, A4 and A14 swapped.
  • Page 7, V1 is not ECC83 (12ax7) but is an ECC85 (6AQ8).
  • Page 6 step 6, there is no A15 FM IF adjustment.
  • Page 6 step 7, A17 will not to to Zero. Refer to 4019 domestic unit procedure www Radiomuseum.org to confirm that A17 is to be adjusted to Minimum voltage.
  • Various capacitors are miss labeled and not identified on page 2.

Happy Restorations,

Paul.

For really detailed explanations of the FM circuit,  I don't think the authors at Sams really expected someone like you to get back in there fifty five years later for an alignment.  Where as the factory information goes beyond accuracy and detail, and is a piece art in just the way everything documented and explained.

One of the best threads here, is how Herr Knoll  debunked the FM tuner box, and explains in detail (with pictures) how to service it when there is a defective component in it.

You might also take a look at Joe Sousas thread that was done with Herr Knoll recently on FM alignmen

Omer,

I've searched for the links you wrote about, but can't find them.  If you can provide the links, I'd like to read the articles.

Paul,

It's not just Sam's, but I've found a few (not many) errors in the original documentation for varous radios.  Plus a few radios not wired in accordance with the schematic, which brings into question, which one is right.  It's nice, however, that you take the time to document the errors here.

Regards, Jim

James:

The alignment link that Omer refers is probably the translation and clarification of the Grundig 2550 alignment instructions.

The link to the FM tuner box repair is probably for the Telefunken 2004. This thread has a very rich debug analysis by Hans Knoll.

I have also come across occasional SAMS errors. Some are quite serious, where tube types are swapped.

Regards,

-Joe

 Joe & Omer,

Thanks for the info.  The first link I was familiar with, having had a similar fault with a Telefunken 2194 that I restored.  Herr Knoll helped me in the repair of that one.

The second link is useful, particularly in the description of the RC damping network and the reason for using it.

Thanks again, Regards, Jim

How many Mac Apple owners have the opportunity to communicate with Steve Wozniak, like we have the opportunity to communicate with Herr Knoll on this forum?!

A special thanks to Hans Knoll for bringing us aid, knowledge and history from another time to enable us to resurrect these fine radios to work again!
