Beside the necessity of tape speed regulation, sometimes it could be useful to put the 'transistor' (the active semiconductor that actually regulates the speed of the motor) outside the metal case of the motor itself, for the sake of cooling (see photos of the 03.Sep.06 message of Jens Dehne). I did it on some cassette recorder, where the transistor either had failed, or was prone to fail. So I mounted the new one outside the motor, on a small piece of alu sheetmetal acting as cooling fin. The three wire connection were soldered to the PCB thru a small hole drilled on the metal cover. This mod obviously apply to all cassette recorder, not only the JVC KD-D4.
