I am in the process of restoring this RCA 86T.  The volume control is not working, but I see that this control has three positions off, something else and then on.  Could someone please tell me what the second position controls.

Hello Mr. Schankman,

I looked at the circuit and there is a combined Power/Tonecontrol -switch, a "Range selector" and a volume-control which is continuous. So I think you are talking about the combined Power/Tonecontrlo-switch ?

You are totally correct.  I rechecked the schematic today and found that the power switch (s3) and the tone control (s4) are the same switch.  Thank you for your response.

Hello Mr. Consales,

It seems that this control is beyond repair.  I have been looking on the net and have not had any luck as yet.  Would you have any idea where I could find a replacement?

Hello Mr. Schankman,

according to the description, this set has an "aural compensated volume control". Therefore, it will be very difficult to find the exact replacement. It is not only the value that is important, but also the mechanical dimensions. So it is best to repair it or find a replacement at the radiomuseum board market (with a photo and dimensions). Or perhaps a donor chassis from EBay ?

Good luck!

Sorry, I was wrong about the subject.  This is not a volume control.  It is a power/tone control.  Temporarily, I am just using the switch for power only.  I placed a switch on the back of the chassis for tone control.
