  • Annotazioni
  • The Adey "Cigar Box Portable" was a single-valve, battery-powered portable radio for headphone use only. It operated on the medium wave (MW) band and featured a variable tuning condenser marked 0-7. Additionally, it included a gramophone pick-up socket and a frame aerial wound around the body. Housed in a genuine wooden cigar box edged with a decorative paper border, it was branded with labels for "dial," "earth," "phones," etc. Measuring 8 inches by 4.5 inches by 2.5 inches, it cost £2 15s 0d, including the valve and batteries. Headphones were an optional extra at 12s 6d.

A unique feature was a 3-function jack-plug "key" located on the top right of the tuning knob. This key served three purposes:

    1. turning the radio on and off by inserting or removing the key
    2. fine-tuning the station by rotating the key on its axis
    3. controlling the volume through a multi-positioned reaction switch.

An interesting variation of this receiver was developed for police work, incorporating a loudspeaker fitted into a policeman's helmet.
