The 260-31 Colour alphanumerics generator is compatible with the standard Motorola Micromodule bus used in CAVIAR Microcomputers. It was designed in 1980 as a complement to the 260-30 Multi-page colour graphics generator and manufactured by Siemens-Albis SA from 1981 till 1985.
The character generator appears as write-only control registers and memory in the address space of the microprocessor, and the characters are merged with the output of the graphics generator in the colour display. The memory can be written at any time, independent of the video flyback. Full page and 80-character line erase are provided, as well as character blinking and inverse video options. Each character occupies two bytes in video memory, comprising its ASCII code, RGB colour, and the other display attributes. To allow fast scrolling, at the start of each vertical scan the row counter is preset from a register which holds the programmable top of screen row number.
The 10x6 dot matrix fonts are stored in a 2716 2Kbyte EPROM that can be reprogrammed by the user to add special custom symbols or characters used in mathematics or languages other than English. The example shows the first 16 characters of the lower case Greek alphabet, which is part of the standard 128-character set.
