  • AWA MICA CONDENSER CODING

"Technicians working on any of the AWA Radiola receivers manufactured during the past three or four years will have noticed that most of the mica condensers are branded with a single letter. This letter is a code indication of the value and capacity tolerance of the unit and is used instead of normal methods of marking because of the difficulty experienced in making intelligible marks on the black sealing compound which is used to protect these units against the effects of humidity.

An inspection of any fairly recent Radiola service manual will reveal that the appropriate code letter is included in the components list in parenthesis after the value of the unit so branded and from this, a fairly complete list could be compiled. However, such a list would not indicate the capacity tolerance, which is almost as important as the mean value, and for convenience of reference, the complete list is appended:-"

    CODE VALUE TOLERANCE
    A 115 mmfd (pF) ± 6 mmfd (pF)
    B 9 mmfd (pF) ± 2 mmfd (pF)
    C 14 mmfd (pF) ± 2 mmfd (pF)

    E 85 mmfd (pF) ± 5 mmfd (pF)
    F 6 mmfd (pF) ± 1 mmfd (pF)
    G 100* mmfd (pF) ± 5 mmfd (pF)
    H 130 mmfd (pF) +10 - 5 mmfd (pF)
    I not used
    J 200 mmfd (pF) ± 20 mmfd (pF)
    K 20 mmfd (pF) ± 3 mmfd (pF)

"*Although the letter "G" was employed when the code was first introduced, it since has been discontinued in favour of the letter "T". Other letters not used are "I", "Q", "V", and "W", the object in all cases being to avoid confusion in the event of poor marking."
