NOTE: The last digit of an Atwater Kent model number represents the quantity of tubes it uses. This applies only to the model numbers having 3 digits after the 90 series models. Additionally, the model numbers ending with 0 or 1 or 2 use 10 or 11 or 12 tubes, respectively. There are a few exceptions to this rule and the model 228Q is one of them having 7 tubes in lieu of having 8 tubes. The other versions of the model 228 all use 8 tubes. The Q (battery) version uses a permanent magnet speaker, whereas, the other models use a speaker having a field coil.
