Concertone Tape Strobe Timer (TST)

This device is an accessory to check tape speed of magnetic tape recorders and players.
It has two speed scales: 7.5 ips (black scale) and 3 3/4 ips (red scale). The tape is positioned around the drum (1) and the tension rollers (2), and extends to the handles (3).
A knob (4) allows the hands to be adjusted to any position, similar to a mechanical watch. A bracket is provided to hold the device on a flat surface.

Operation:

With a tape speed of 3.75 ips and a time of 60 seconds measured by a stopwatch, the device should read 60 units on the red scale.  Similarly, a tape speed of 7.5 ips for 60 seconds should read 30 units on the black scale.  The difference obtained in relation to these values allows calculating the tape speed error.  The device requires initial calibration based on the thickness of the tape.

The small drum (1), with black and silver stripes acts as a strobe when illuminated with light from a 60 Hz alternating current lamp. The stripes will be stationary when the tape speed is correct.
