The Boonton Ballantine Variotransformer Model 5 was a transformer designed for radio frequency passive amplification. Primary and secondary windings are in a stator/rotor configuration, with a single knob that rotates a winding, resulting in an amplified peaked resonant tuned frequency in the 550-1760 kHz range (170-550 meters).
It was designed by Stuart Ballantine, an engineer with the Radio Frequency Laboratories and manufactured by Boonton Rubber Manufacturing Co. The housing was molded Bakelite, which was a specialty of Boonton.
US Patent 1,514,416 was filed on Dec. 19, 1922 and granted on Nov. 4, 1924.
This variotransformer was included in the 1-tube RF Amplifying Unit Model 5.
