In May 1940 the People’s Printing & Publishing Co. of W.A. Ltd. was granted a broadcasting license.  The company published the Westralian Worker newspaper which was the official organ of the Western Australian Labor Party.

6KY went on air at 8PM on 23 October 1941; transmitting 500 watts on 210 Metres (1430 kHz) using an AWA transmitter from a 172ft insulated mast located 3.5 miles from Perth.

The purpose built studios were located at 17-19 James Street, Perth and the transmitter was located on land fronting Government Road, between Crawford and Boulton Streets in Inglewood.[1]

    6KY changed frequency to 1320 kHz, November 6, 1943.[2]

Later changed to 1210 kHz and finally 1208 kHz with the 9 kHz raster in 1978.

The company constructed a rural transmitter at Narrogin in Western Australia  transmitting on 920kHz, from 1978, 918kHz, going on air on the  20 June 1951, with the call sign 6NA.[3 ]

Both stations were sold to News Ltd. in May 1968.[4]

In 1981 STW9 acquired radio station 6KY and eventually new facilities were built for 6KY at STW9 TV Tuart Hill complex. [5]

1 June 1991, 6KY became one of two Perth radio stations to convert from the AM to FM bands. The station became known upon conversion to FM as 6KYFM, and later as Mix 94.5 FM.
