  • Bemerkung
  • Durig the WW2 "The Brush Development Company" made this Navy Wire Recorder KS12016 which served as a basis for designs of other magnetic-recording equipment for various branches of the armed forces. This wire recorder is significant in that it was the first magnetic recorder where the recording medium was housed in a totally enclosed magazine. This magazine is attached to the portion of the instrument containing the drive motor and the amplifier section. The 750-r.p.m. motor is directly coupled to the take-up reel spindle during recording and reproduction. It has to be removed and rotated to engage the rewind spindle to the motor. A step-up gear in the magazine gives a rewind-forward ratio of 1.6 to 1. The magazine contains a ring-type recording head and solenoidal erasing head, together with a level-wind mechanism, elapsed-time indicator, and automatic stop. Electrical connections were made to the magazine by means of plug-type connectors. The recording medium is 0.006-inch 420-type stainless steel wire and its speed increased from a minimum of 5 ft. per sec. to a maximum of 7.5 ft. per sec. Mechanical brakes in the magazine tension the wire during operation and prevent unreeling while the magazine is removed.
