  • The Capehart model 500FR has a Tuner Model 400-F with the following 12 tubes: 6K7, 6K7, 6L7 (Mixer), 6K7, 6G5, 6K7, 6H6, 6K7, 6H6, 6J7, 6C5, 5Z4 - according to Rider's 8. This model 500-FR includes also a Bass Amplifier with 6N7G, 2 x 6C5G, 6F6G, 2 x 6L6G and 83 (25 watts, driving the 18 inch speaker, schematic N-920); a Treble Amplifier (schematic N-919) with 6F6G, 2 x 6L6G and 5Z3 (for a 12 inch speaker) and a Middle Register Amplifier with 6F6G, 2 x 6L6G and 5Z3 which is not included in the model 400-F. Here it is for a 14 inch speaker. All speakers are electrodynamic. The 6K7, 6H6 and 6J7 are the tubes for AFC (Automatic Frequency Control) for the 3 lower bands. The 6C5 is the oscillator. For one frequency there are 10 tuned circuits instead of 9 (see the first AK7). The bass amplifier does dynamic expansion (with the two 6C5). There are remote tone controls for the 3 AF channels plus a phono Hi-Fidelity switch.
If a model shows a "R" behind the suffix for season, it has a remote control.

See here the "Common information for the Capehart model pages for the 1930s and 1940s" and for the information about Series 400 here.

The Capehart 500 series could be called an "Ultra-Luxury Changer" - but is also a great receiver. It was sold for about 5 years - some with custom built cabinets - until civil production had to be given up because of the entry in the WW2. It can also be seen in the movie from 1939, "Intermezzo" with Leslie Howard and Ingrid Bergman as stars.
The series 500 were made with two cabinet styles: 500 Empire as 500E, 500F, 500G, 500H and 500K for 1940/41 - and 501 Spanish but only as 501H Spanish for 1939/40 and 500K Spanish for 1940/41 - plus some custom made cabinets.

This model 500FR represents the most popular "French Renaissance" mahagony cabinet in the Empire stile. Below there are four large louvered dooors that cover the three large loudspeakers and above there are doors to operate the record changer and/or the receiver. The model 500 has also been recovered as a typical custom made model in the form and color that it received the name "Painted Gypsy Funeral Wagon". See myvintagetv com for some beautiful photos, also one for the technical equal model Capehart 501 in Oak Spanish Style. There you find also other Capehart models with very nice pictures.
