  • The first cartridge based magnetic tape Talking Book, produced for the RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People) from around 1960.

    Cartridge include: complete mechanism, track change linkage, replay heads, and two tape spools stacked one over the other.
    Tape speed: Nonlinear driven by a spindle from the player.
    Spindle drive speed: 15 rpm.
    As tape played out, one reel increased in diameter and the other diminished. Tape speed depended on the diameter of the reel driven by the spindle. The replay process is the reverse of recording and so pitch of the signal is kept constant.
