A late example of an "All American Five" ("AA5") valve/tube am only superhet, a type made in huge numbers originally in the US from the 1930's - 1960's, much of the later production coming from Japan. This five tube set is an example of the typical tube line-up ( four plus rectifier.) Two pentodes and one double-diode-triode cover the first three stages with a single AF output/power tube. The design is transformerless, heaters being in series with a half-wave rectifier providing ht. One potentially lethal feature is permantly mains ac live chassis, a practice carried over to many early tv's. This set was clearly designed to have maximum visual impact with minimal production costs, see for example the tuning control without any form of separate indicator scale. The twin-speaker/mono layout was another trademark of the Commodore brand and the only concession to "luxury". Thousands of these AA5 sets survive, their brightly coloured cases a cheery antidote to the austere dark-coloured sets of the previous tube eras, this helping to give them a strong collector following to-day.
