The 1461 wavemeter is a calibrated oscillator with a calibration accuracy of ±2% with a meter connected to read grid current. In addition to its use as an oscillator, model 1461 can be used to check the resonant frequencies of passive networks by observing the effect on grid current when the network under test is coupled to the wavemeter. By switching the oscillator valve to operate as a diode the instrument can also be used as an absorption meter.
A further facility permits the measurement of small capacitors within the range 0 to 40pF. The instrument covers a frequency range of 1.3MHz to 300MHz using seven plug-in coils. When the wavemeter is used as a grid dip meter, a sharp dip occurs in the meter reading as resonance with the tuned circuit under test is reached. When the instrument is used as a detector, energy is absorbed from the circuit under test and the meter gives a sharp peak reading.
A telephone jack outlet also enables a beat note to be heard when checking energized circuits.
