  • The Datum Model 4200 is a digital cassette tape transport that was designed for OEM applications. The drive uses servo-controlled reel motors, rather than a capstan/pinch roller, to maintain constant tape speed and tension at high speeds. The take-up reel motor controls the tape speed, using feedback derived from the shaft velocity information. The supply reel motor is in a servo loop whose feedback is tape tension information derived from motor torque and shaft velocity.

The reel servos maintain constant tape speed within ±10%.
The deck is a heavy die-casting and uses ±0.001" ceramic/stainless steel reference edge tape guides.
For use with certified computer grade data cassettes containing 300 ft of 0.15 in wide tape.

NRZI, PE or CRB recording. NRZI to 800 fcpi; PE to 1600 fcpi (800 bpi).
    1 or 2 tracks, read/write or read-after-write heads.
Nominal capacity at 800 bpi 2.88 Mbits per track.
    Read/write speed 15 to 75 ips.
    Rewind/search speed 120 ips.
    Maximum acceleration/deceleration 5000 in/sec2.
    Standard start/stop distance 0.375 in.
    Unrestricted bidirectional operation.
    Maximum data rate 60 Kbit/sec/track.
    Infrared EOT and BOT sensing.
EOT and BOT early warning hole sensing.

    Power supplies:
    +15v and -15v ±1%, 150 mA.
    +5v ±5%, 750 mA.
    +12v and -12v unregulated, 200 mA continuous, 2.5 A peaks.

The Datum 4200 tape transport was used in the microprocessor controlled cassette data unit designed in 1976 by Bruce Taylor and manufactured in Switzerland by Borer Electronics AG.
