- Notes
-
The Elliott rotary standing wave indicator B906 allows more accurate and convenient measurement of impedancethan the conventional slotted line, especially at millimetric wavelengths. Depending upon rotary rather than linear movement, the manufacturing difficulties are eased considerably, and sources of inaccuracy such as variations in coupling and waveguide attenuation are reduced to a minimum. Additionally, the use of a coupling hole rather than a probe increases the power handling capacity and eliminates the need for an intermediate coaxial section before RF detection. This instrument is designed to cover the complete waveguide 22 frequency range. To measure the standing wave ratio, the outer dial is set to the frequency and the detector head is rotated. The variation in output indicates the Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) modulus while the phase is indicated in degrees on the inner phase dial attached to the head. Since the latter may be locked in any position relative to the detected plane of polarization, the impedance may be transferred directly to a Smith chart. With this instrument it is no longer necessary to know the wavelength in the guide. The frequency range is 26.5GHz to 40GHz and the residual VSWR better than 0.994.
