  • Remarques
  • The Emerson model 461 is known for having a cardboard cabinet, but we are not sure if it was before also made with bakelite. Perhaps Emerson could only use what was left on cabinets and this even for several models. Maybe the same case applies for other brands. At least in January 1942, Radio Retailing described the cabinet as "...a simulated leather cabinet". Bunis (4) and Slusser (7) mention the cabinet as "simulated leather". But Emerson already used tan/blue leatherette for its model 338 portable in 1940 - but which is an other technique.

Please tell us or even bring in photos if you have an Emerson 461 with bakelite cabinet - or other Emerson with cardboard cabinet fromt the war time, when actually civil production had to be stopped. We don't know the material for model 361.

We are also interested in showing you other models with simulated leather like the model EF363 (1940-42), And we show the DU-379 personal radio with a leatherette-covered cardboard cabinet.

Hello,

I have this radio. The cabinet appears the same as in your file under your heading emerson_461.  My 461 cabinet is made of cardboard, not the listed Bakelite, with a thin "leatherette" covering. However, it also has a spring-loaded handle. The chassis inside has the tube lineup of Emerson 361. From the photos on the web site, the radio pictured there has the same kind of wear and indentations as mine. Are you interested in any photos of my example for comparison?
