  • Notes
  • This Catalin color combination was never made by Detrola. A modified case from a Halliwell Solar-Beam Timer and a 274 chassis made it. See here the correct model 274 split grille. Not even the Catalin model 281 was made in such a color.

This is a good example how money is made by cheating: create a new unknown variant, possibly an eyecatcher which is highly desirable for less critical collectors (or nearly perfect looking even to specialists) and you can cash a fortune: here not less than 1825 greenbacks.

Sad to say an often found practice to repaint radios in unusual colors (always attention getting, never dull!) to boast with or sell it with unfair profit. Daylight robbery...

What a temptation to use this Halliwell Timer case to produce a decorative eyecatching variant of a Detrola 281 or 274!

The cut off Catalin pieces from the grille and dial openings are used to get matching fillings for the three original holes. The trim parts could even be bought (if not self made).

And the work will be rewarded by an astronomical auction price, paid from an uninformed buyer....
