  • The British Gramophone & Typewriter Company introduced the Monarch Senior Gramophone in 1905. The company produced two distinct models of the Monarch Senior gramophone between 1905 and 1911.

    First Monarch Senior (1905):

    • Introduced by the British Gramophone & Typewriter Company in 1905.
    • Features an ornate oak case with egg-and-dart mouldings and round corner columns.
    • Equipped with a triple-spring worm-drive motor and a 12” turntable.
    • Includes a Gramophone & Typewriter Exhibition sound box.
    • The black-painted horn is a flower horn.
    • Gained fame when presented to Captain Robert Falcon Scott for his Terra Nova expedition to Antarctica and the South Pole in 1910.

    The Ionic (1907-1911):

    • A new mahogany Monarch Senior model available in Great Britain.
    • Substantially different design, less fussy than the original.
    • Named “The Ionic” due to the Ionic capitals on the four corner columns.
    • Gramophones were equipped with either flower or morning glory horns.
    • Upscale 3-spring models could be upgraded with smooth or speartip oak or mahogany horns, ranging from 18.5" to 22" in diameter
