In 1928, with an inventory of several dozen unsold MU-1 Synchrophase sets on hand, and a radio-buying public refusing to purchase radios without single-dial tuning, Grebe decided to re-invent the 3-dial MU-1 as a single-dial Model 55 by reducing the size of the outer two condenser dials so they could be hidden behind the panel (but still ganged with the visible center condenser), placing triangular walnut plates over the horizontal holes that had been pre-cut in the MU-1 panels, and then adding walnut veneers to sections of the cabinet so that the radio looked like something other than a re-upholstered three-dial MU-1 Synchrophase.
