  • The Grundig Majestic model 3028 is the export version of the domestic Grundig 3028. Instead of LW and SW (besides broadcast and FM) it has two SW bands, 5.9 to 13 and 12.9 to 23 mc. It also has 4 speakers instead of 3. One is a 3" x 3" electrostatic speaker. The dynamic speakers are 7" x 10" and two of 5" x 7". The power transformer is for two voltages. The Importer and wholesaler was Majestic International Sales Corp., 743 W. La Salle Street, Chicago 10, Illinois.

While servicing this radio, I found that after replacing C4 with a 10 ufd polypropylene capacitor, the radio sounds more sonicly correct.  The original electrolytic capacitor measures at around 19 ufd on a capacitor checker with a very good ESR reading.

Seeing tone chokes in various circuits on this radio, are these radios more demanding of tighter tolerance components in their designs?

I understand the electrolytic capacitor rule of +100% / -50% being acceptable for capacitors, but considering that this capacitor is being used in a speaker circuit, most designers seem to prefer using non electrolytic capacitors for tonal consistency.

My Grundig Majestic 3028 does not receive BC stations below 80 on the dial. Above 80 the reception is as it should be. I do not even hear any background noise when I move into the 80 or less part of the radio spectrum.

Does anyone have any idea what I should check to fix this? I have the schematic and have done a full re-capp of this unit and it sounds beautiful

Also, is it possible to get the magic eye to be less sensitive? It is brand new and a conversion from EM34 to 6E5C. The two beams actually overlap slightly and the worst signal closes the eye 3/4

I just finshed re-capping my Grundig 3028 and now I have no volume control, just one steady volume, tone is flat also

As I am a novice, could someone please advise me as to where I probably made the mistake on replacing which capacitor?

The replacement values are all good, I think I just hooked one of them up to the wong place

 

Does anyone have pictures of the under chassis with nice close ups of the capacitors so I could compare? That would help alot

I did put an ohm meter on the volume pot and it does show change so I am pretty sure the pot is fine

This radio played ok except for a hum before I did the full re-cap, so I am sure its something I did

Good news, the hum is gone

From now on I will make sure I have 3D pictures of each component I change

I replaced 15+ capacitors, everything I could think of or was suspect

The pictures I took of the original caps were blurry and I have no nice reference (BIG MISTAKE) When I went back to double check I could not see the positions

Maybe some idea of where to start
